Let‘s take to the streets on 8 March!

Every day, everywhere in the world, womyn, lesbians, nonbinary, inter and trans people fight for their visibility and freedom. On 8 March, we meet in the street to make our message heard.

Taking to the streets as feminists is still necessary, in Austria and elsewhere. Often, we are told to be content with our situation. But we cannot accept the status quo. The same old oppressive structures are still at work today, although sometimes they manifest themselves in a more covert and subtle way. We still need to denounce and attack these structures! We are affected by physical, psychological and sexualised violence, the unfair division of labour, the double stress of wage labour and reproductive labour, restrictions of our self-determination regarding pregnancy and sexuality, and by our bodies being made a taboo subject. And still, we battle against narrow and restrictive gender norms, so-called ‘beauty standards’, and against forced surgery on disabled, intersex, and transgender people.

The pandemic is further intensifying existing inequalities. FLINT face greater levels of unemployment than other demographics. If they are employed, they are more likely to do the more dangerous jobs that are categorised as „essential“ during the pandemic.

On top of the professional and financial burdens, FLINT are generally expected to perform the lion’s share of tasks related to childcare and the supporting of relatives. While curfews, lockdowns and isolation are not the triggers of domestic violence, they are reinforcing factors, and again the most affected group is FLINT.

But these injustices are merely the tip of the iceberg. As long as these injustices exist, we have a thousand reasons to take to the streets, but besides this, the 8th of March offers the opportunity to show public solidarity with the various international FLINT campaigns and celebrate our strength.

We, the committee of the 8 March events in Salzburg, are affected by oppressive structures in different ways. We do not want to speak FOR people affected differently than we are – we want to talk WITH you. We want a society free from discrimination; this is why we are trying to address oppressive structures that do not affect us personally. By writing about these structures, we want to gain and give insights into issues that matter to us. In this spirit, we invite contributions to our blog. Please send your texts to 8.maerz.sbg@systemli.org. We are looking forward to your feedback.
